The List

Not happy with our lot in life, we searched for a solution

A hole inside that we would fill, we sought absolution

Feeling we need attain success, there was something that was missed

So we did map out felicity, we developed a contentment list

Number one on our inventory, which preceded all the rest

Was a respectable career, so we would do our best

We trained unduly hard, found the job we were made for

A amicable mate was next, one that we would adore

Now a pleasant place to live, a residence to call our own

A dog, a cat, nice furniture and a stereo to set the tone

Television a car, all things we craved for our delight

All those nice things, every convenience, still no happiness in sight

What could have gone amiss, it doesn't seem fair

The basement's all finished, the couch matches the chair

The list is near complete, but still there is no change

Could it be that we were mistaken, is bliss out of range

So empty inside, our list was not working

And deep down in our souls, corruption was lurking

Continuing we ventured, to climb out of our hole

We started a family, which was our final goal

When that did not help, we thought life a curse

Our list all completed, things still getting worse

Till finally reaching, the bottom of the heap

Confused and angry, we had never sunk so deep

We needed succour, our backs were against the wall

Needing some one to rescue us, lest we finally fall

Seeking for the truth, we came to realize

That our insides were ailing, and our outside was lies

Possessions do not heal, they cannot fill the hole

Only a loving God can soothe us, and restore us our soul
